iPad apps that are great for children (Appolicious)

Though I successfully smuggled my iPad into the house on launch day and had all the fun to myself, it wasn’t long before I was forced to share with my children and my nieces and nephews, and before I knew it, I’d discovered a whole new world of uses.

Every parent who travels frequently or has relatives visiting from out of town should download the A Story Before Bed iPad app (free). By visiting astorybeforebed.com and paying $6.99 (per book), anyone can record themselves via Web cam reading a storybook and essentially send it to an iPad. The book’s pages are displayed on the screen with a small Web cam window in the corner, showing the reader, and the story can be replayed over and over again.

The Cat in the Hat - Dr. SeussLittle ones and beginning readers will love Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat and ABC ($2.99 each). You can select “Read to Me” or “Read it Myself,” and most of the objects on each page can be tapped to hear their name and see the word.

Word MagicAnother great iPad app for the pre-school set is Word Magic (99 cents). The iPad app shows a word with one letter missing, with an accompanying picture, states it aloud, and gives several letters to select from to complete the word.

Magic PianoI lost hours of my life to Smule’s Magic Piano ($2.99 for a limited time). Play a swirled keyboard freestyle, or learn to play a selection of classical pieces by following the lights on the screen. Choose duets, and get connected to another Magic Piano player somewhere in the world.

The iPad isn’t just meant to be an costly toy for a 4-year-old child. Older children will have fun with games, of course, but can also learn and be more productive with the help of some apps.

SAT® and ACT® Vocabulary Builder by AccelaStudy®World Book, This Day in History (free) shows historical events for the current day or any other day of the year. The ACT & SAT Vocabulary Builder ($4.99) reviews words and their definitions, and automatically builds new words into the vocabulary as time progresses. The iPad app iStudiez Pro ($2.99) helps students organize their courses and assignments.

Epicurious Recipes & Shopping ListParents will love both Epicurious Recipes & Shopping List (free) and 170,000+ Big Oven Pro ($4.99) to help plan meals and organize their grocery shopping.

My current favorite iPad app is Star Walk ($4.99). Hold your iPad up to the sky, and a map of stars and planets will appear on the screen. Move the iPad around the sky, and the view changes. Fun for children and adults alike, and I can’t wait to sit out in the backyard with my children this summer to stargaze, and actually know what we’re gazing at.

We’re still figuring out all the ways the iPad is going to change our digital lives. Because it’s so simple to share the device, the right apps are going to help families organize their time and share more time together.
