Mayor unveils $578 million proposed budget
Mayor Kathy Taylor on Thursday unveiled to the City Council her nearly $578 million proposed budget, which includes unpaid furloughs, abolishment of positions and utility rate hikes.
The operating budget is a little more than $528 million, an increase of 0.9 percent from last year, while the capital budget is about $50 million, or a decrease of 20 percent.
The budget, which must be approved by the council before the next fiscal year begins July 1, includes four days of unpaid furloughs. It also abolishes 98 positions, 17 of which are currently occupied.
It also includes utility rate hikes for water, sewer and stormwater, which would have a combined impact of about $2.47 a month for the average single-family household.
The Police Department and Fire Department would get 20-member academies in the spring of 2010.
With the current attrition rates of about 2.5 police officers a month, the department will stay above its authorized strength of 780 officers.
The Fire Department will continue to stay below its authorized strength of 687 firefighters.
