The work, by composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and writer Richard Thomas, will be "a major event in the UK arts calendar" the ROH said.

Thomas was a co-creator of the controversial production Jerry Springer: The Opera.

Smith died aged 39 of an accidental prescription drug overdose in Florida.

Oil tycoon

At the time of her death, Smith – a stripper who went on to find fame as a model and actress – was embroiled in a long-running legal battle to claim a share of the estate of her late husband.

Billionaire oil tycoon J Howard Marshall was 89 years old – 63 years her senior – when they married.

Thomas stated the opera would end with Smith’s death rather than the court battle over the disposal of her remains and custody of her daughter that followed.

Anna Nicole will have its world premiere at the Covent Garden venue on 17 February 2011 with Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek in the lead role.

Other highlights in the ROH 2010/11 season includes the Royal Ballet’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, a co-production with the National Ballet of Canada, choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon.

The UK premiere of Philip Glass’s In The Penal Colony, based on a short story by Franz Kafka about an execution machine, will be seen in September.

And world renowned soprano Angela Gheorghiou will star in the title role of Adriana Lecouvreur, based on the life of the tragic French actress, in November.

Comedian Roy "Chubby" Brown hit a woman in the face during a foul-mouthed dispute in a Teesside supermarket automobile park, a court heard.

The comic is stated to have hit 21-year-old Kelly Oliver after nearly colliding with her grandmother’s automobile in Middlesbrough last September.

Brown, 65 and charged under his real name Royston Vasey, denied common assault at Teesside Magistrates’ Court.

The comedian, of Northallerton, is known for his explicit sexual material.

Viviene Turner, prosecuting, stated Brown reacted angrily after Miss Oliver watched him reverse his silver Lexus within an inch of her grandmother’s automobile in the automobile of park of the Middlesbrough town centre branch of Sainsbury’s on 2 September.

The court heard he wound down his window and swore at her. Miss Oliver, now six months pregnant, stated she did not respond.

She claimed when she walked over to a ticket machine, Brown got out of his automobile and began shouting at her.

Number plate

Brown is then stated to have hit her with his right hand on the left side of her face.

The court heard Brown drove off when Miss Oliver’s grandmother, Linda McAleer, 63, stated she would note down his registration number.

The court was shown CCTV images of the row, but the chairman of the Bench, Fran Wood, stated it had not been "helpful" to either the defence or the prosecution.

Mrs McAleer stated she saw the comedian hit Miss Oliver.

Eyewitness Rachel McKenna, 38, stated she first heard swearing then saw Miss Oliver struck by Brown.

She stated she recognised the man as Roy Chubby Brown and noticed the letters RCB in his number plate.

Brown admitted confronting Miss Oliver, but stated when she raised her arm he believed he was going to be hit himself.

He described the incident as "handbags at 20 paces".

The court was told Brown admitted in 1996 to common assault occasioning actual bodily harm against his ex-wife, for which he was fined £300 and ordered to pay compensation.

Miss Oliver had two cautions relating to violent incidents and failed to comply with a dispersal notice in 2008, the court heard.

The hearing was adjourned until Tuesday.

Some chickens have sexual-identity issues, waddling around with half-male and half-female plumage.

Now researchers have figured out the cause of the gender-confusing traits: Half of their bodies are full of female sex cells, while the other half contains mostly male cells.

“This research has completely overturned what we previously thought about how sexual characteristics were determined in birds,” stated study researcher Michael Clinton of the University of Edinburgh, Roslin, in Scotland. “We now believe that the major factors determining sexual development are built into male and female cells and derive from basic differences in how sex chromosome genes are expressed.”

The findings are detailed this week in the journal Nature.

Previously, scientists thought whether an animal became male or female occurred during embryo development when genetic and other factors instructed gonads to become ovaries or testes. These organs, in turn, released hormones that signaled to the brain and reproductive tract, “You are female (or male).” In chickens , those same hormones were also thought to signal gender to tissues that would become feathers and muscles.

The new research, however, suggests “in birds, sex determination occurs in cells across the entire body, not just in the gonads,” Lindsey Barske and Blanche Capel of Duke University Medical Center write in an accompanying perspective article in the same issue of Nature.

In addition to plumage color, the male and female cells also are involved in wattle length (fleshy growth hanging from the head or neck) and comb height.

Sexual identity In most mammals, including humans, females have two X (sex) chromosomes, while males have one X and one Y. For birds, the sex chromosomes are labelled as Z or W and females have dissimilar chromosomes (ZW), while males have matching ones (ZZ).

The researchers analyzed three of these funky chickens , testing the sex chromosomes from various tissues throughout the chickens’ bodies. Tissues from the “male” side of the body had mostly ZZ cells (about 80 percent), while those on the “female” half had higher proportions of ZW cells.

Since all the tissues in the body are exposed to the same hormones, the researchers suspected the cells must just respond differently to the hormones. In other words, the body’s cells are set in their sexual identity no matter whether they get a squirt of female or male hormones.

“So that made us think the cells must have a sex identity,” Clinton said.

The research team included University of Edinburgh scientists Debiao Zhao and Derek McBride.

Female and male cells To test this idea, they transplanted female chicken cells into a developing male embryo and male cells into a developing female embryo. They did this by inserting the cells into a little hole in the eggshell, sealing it up and waiting a week before examining the tissues of the developing chicken embryos .

Results showed that ZW donor cells (female) “knew” they were gonads but they did not get incorporated into the testes, and ZZ donor cells (male) did not get incorporated into the ovaries and also did not express the female hormone called aromatase in the host’s ovary.

That suggests “their sexual identity was already fixed by the time they arrived in the host tissue,” Barske and Capel write.

As for why chickens evolved this system in which sexual appearance is controlled primarily by the sexual identity of cells rather than hormones, Clinton speculates that it’s just a simpler system compared with the hormonal one that mammals use.

“We think all birds will be like this, and it’s possible other vertebrates will have elements of this system,” Clinton told LiveScience.

Rising tensions between subscription TV providers and the networks have brought together rivals including Time Warner Cable Inc., Dish Network Corp., DirecTV Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and even a consumer rights group often critical of the companies, Public Knowledge.

The group of 14 companies, consumer and trade groups sent a joint petition to the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday, seeking a change in the way broadcasters give cable TV and other providers permission to carry local channels on their lineups.

One company was conspicuously absent from the petition. Comcast Corp., the nation’s largest cable TV operator, would become a broadcaster if its plan to take control of NBC Universal is approved.

The National Association of Broadcasters is not backing down.

“To see billion dollar pay TV companies asking for government intervention to protect their exorbitant profits is just plain wrong,” the industry group stated in a statement.

Early this year, Time Warner Cable customers faced the threat of losing their Fox stations, which broadcast shows like “The Simpsons,” and “American Idol,” during a standoff with News Corp., which owns Fox.

“Consumers are increasingly being put in the middle of disputes,” Time Warner Cable stated in a statement. “The petitioners implore the FCC to act expeditiously to help prevent further consumer harm.”

Cable TV and other video providers are concerned that broadcasters have threatened to shut down, or actually ceased, TV signals when speaks do not go their way. They want regulators to stop broadcasters from yanking TV signals during contract talks. They also want the FCC to put into place mandatory arbitration or other measures to resolve disputes.
