Funky chickens have sexual-identity issues

Some chickens have sexual-identity issues, waddling around with half-male and half-female plumage.
Now researchers have figured out the cause of the gender-confusing traits: Half of their bodies are full of female sex cells, while the other half contains mostly male cells.
“This research has completely overturned what we previously thought about how sexual characteristics were determined in birds,” stated study researcher Michael Clinton of the University of Edinburgh, Roslin, in Scotland.

An unknown person dubbed The Midnight Knitter by West Cape May residents is covering tree branches and lamp poles with tiny sweaters under cover of darkness.
Mayor Pam Kaithern states police are looking into the guerrilla needlework, which technically is against the law because it is being done on public property without permission.

Chef dishes up cheese made from breast milk

Human cheese may sound more Hannibal Lecter than haute cuisine, but it’s an intriguing new menu item at a fancy New York City eatery.
No humans were harmed in the making of the novel new dish; rather, mommy’s milk supplies the dairy quotient for the tiny canapé offered up by chef Daniel Angerer at his Klee Brasserie.
Noted chef Angerer, who once bested Bobby Flay on Food Network’s “Iron Chef” reality competition, states necessity was the mom of invention for his new ...

The world’s craziest roads

Just past Dracula’s castle, deep within Romania’s Carpathian Mountains, the Transfagarasan Highway is a 55-mile stretch of roadway so scenic and wickedly winding that it rendered Jeremy Clarkson  glib host of the BBC’s popular automotive show “Top Gear” practically speechless. That ‘s no small feat, since for more than 20 years, Clarkson has made it his business to bomb around the world’s most breathtaking roads.

Chameleons have weatherproof tongues

Cold conditions normally slow down muscle performance, helping to explain why Winter Olympics athletes and others warm up before physical activity.
Chameleons, however, could easily win a gold medal for tongue projectile speed. New research has found that the tongue of this lizard shoots out like a rubber band gun, maintaining high function at even very low temperatures.
Understanding how chameleons’ ballistic tongues work could lead to advancements in prostheses, sports equipment and more.
